Bug-Free Automated Comfort
Across the UK, the popularity of glazed extensions and expansive bifold doors continues to grow. Flooding homes with daylight and offering a seamless connection to the outdoors, these features are perfect for modern living. However, what often goes unconsidered during the design stage is the unintended downside – large openings create an ideal environment for insects to enter and linger indoors.
This was exactly the challenge facing our customer, whose beautiful living space featured a pair of internal-opening bifold doors. While they loved the fresh air and openness, the warmer, brighter interior was attracting flies and other insects – particularly in summer. They had previously used manual screens, but wanted a more convenient, contemporary, and visually discreet solution.

A Modern Upgrade with Electric Screens
After discussing their needs with our team, the homeowners selected two electric fly screens (power screens). These automated screens are ideal for covering large openings such as bifold doors, offering smooth operation, long-lasting performance, and minimal visual impact.
Each screen was custom-made to fit the 3.4m-wide door openings precisely. The chosen 18:14 black performance insect mesh allows 55% open area, balancing insect protection with excellent airflow and clear views.
The bifold fly screens were retrofitted externally to the property’s existing frames – a practical choice that still met the customer’s design requirements. The discreet cassette profile sits neatly within the frame lines, preserving the clean architectural look.
Installation
Style without Compromise
One of the client’s key priorities was ensuring the screens blended seamlessly with the home’s exterior, avoiding any bulky fittings or intrusive design elements.
Because our power screens can also be recessed into building fabric during construction, they are a popular choice for new builds and extensions. However, their weatherproof, robust design also makes them perfect for retrofitting to existing homes without sacrificing quality or style.
The Result
Effortless Insect Protection
With the touch of a button, the insect screens for bifolds glide smoothly into place, creating an instant barrier against flies, midges and other pests. The mesh also helps soften sunlight, reducing glare and improving comfort in the living space. When not in use, the screens retract completely into their discreet housing, keeping sightlines clear.
The installation was completed in half a day, with the customer praising both the efficiency and professionalism of our fitting team. Now, they can enjoy open bifold doors for fresh air and garden views – without the constant irritation of insects indoors.

testimonial
“Architects and homeowners may not consider the downside of large openings and glazed ceilings – the flies are attracted by the warmth and light and become trapped inside. The installation was completed in around half a day with no issues at all. Phantom Screens conducted themselves professionally which gave me great confidence and reassurance that I was purchasing a high-quality product. People think screens can corrupt architectural design; my advice is – they don’t, you don’t notice them at all, they’re a restrained part of the exterior frame and add real value to light, open living spaces.”
