Set in a beautiful Surrey valley, this striking contemporary home would not look out of place on a Grand Designs episode. With its minimalist architecture, clean lines, and a seamless connection between the interior and outdoor swimming pool areas, the property reflects the growing trend for self-builds and high-spec new builds with large, glazed sliding doors instead of traditional conservatories.
The owners had chosen elegant Velfac doors for the pool-facing rooms – a Scandinavian design where one panel pushes out and slides across the other. While visually stunning, these doors also presented a familiar challenge: how to enjoy ventilation, natural light, and views without inviting insects, glare, or prying eyes.

Custom Made Mesh Screens
The homeowners contacted Phantom Screens for a bespoke screening solution that could meet multiple needs – insect protection, solar shading, and increased privacy – without compromising the home’s clean, modern aesthetic. Our recommendation was our manual mesh window screen, a slimline, retractable design that can be colour-matched to any frame and operates smoothly without cords or dangling strings.
While manual fly screens for windows are normally fitted with standard insect mesh, this project was a rare exception. At the customer’s request, we supplied a combination of solar mesh and privacy mesh to meet their unique requirements. This special order provided the performance benefits of solar control and privacy enhancement alongside the insect protection they needed.
Installation
The Ultimate Home Upgrade
In total, we installed eight screens – two for each of the four pool-facing rooms. On each set of Velfac doors, one screen covered the fixed glass panel, fitted with solar mesh for glare and heat reduction. The other screen covered the sliding door, combining insect protection and solar control to reduce heat build-up while letting in fresh air — without the nuisance of flies or debris.
This clever arrangement means the family can sleep with their balcony doors open in summer, confident that their bedroom window fly screens will keep the space comfortable and bug-free. The solar and privacy fabrics also help to filter light and shield the interior from view, giving them a sense of seclusion while enjoying the pool and garden.
