Reducing Heat in Home Office with Discreet Window and Door Screens

Reducing Heat in Home Office with Discreet Window and Door Screens

A busy family based in southwest London recently turned to Phantom Screens to solve a growing problem in their elegant ground floor home office – unmanageable indoor heat. With long workdays, plenty of natural sunlight, and no air conditioning, the space often became too warm to concentrate, especially during the summer months. Opening the window helped – but it also invited in flies, pollen, and the daily intrusion of garden debris.

finding The solution

A familiar friend from across the pond

Originally from the USA, this homeowner was already familiar with the benefits of high-quality screening solutions. In North America, retractable screens are a staple in modern homes, used not just for insect protection, but for temperature control and ventilation too. They were surprised to find limited awareness of such products in the UK – and relieved to discover that Phantom Screens offered premium London fly screens backed by full-service installation.

After an initial survey, our experts recommended a tailored package of manual screens to address all key entry points on the ground floor. A window screen was selected for the office – allowing it to be left open throughout the day for increased airflow, without the annoyance of insects or dust. This was the first and most important step in reducing heat in the home office – allowing warm air to escape and fresh air to flow in naturally.

Installation

Prioritising air flow with discreet screens

Elsewhere, two sets of retractable door screens were installed: one for the kitchen’s single door and another for the double doors leading from the living room to the garden. These fly screens for back doors provide complete insect protection while preserving the home’s seamless indoor–outdoor living experience. Crucially, they retract neatly when not in use, maintaining the clean lines and light-filled aesthetic of the property.

Each screen was fitted with our standard 18:14 charcoal mesh, a durable, high-performance insect barrier that also helps to reduce heat build with a 55% UV block. For a home reliant on passive ventilation, this was a subtle but highly effective way of keeping temperatures manageable and ensuring the family could work and relax in comfort.

The screens were finished in standard white to blend effortlessly with the home’s neutral palette. With no cords or bulky frames, they look as though they have always been part of the home – a hallmark of Phantom’s bespoke design.

The Result

Total comfort without compromise

The ground floor now functions as a cool, breezy and insect-free zone. The home office, once stifling in warmer weather, now benefits from all-day ventilation, making it an ideal environment for focused work. As a result, the homeowners have reduced their reliance on artificial cooling methods and improved energy efficiency.

Elsewhere, both kitchen and living room doors can now be left open throughout the day, encouraging airflow across the whole floor while keeping out pests and plant debris. This has cut cleaning time dramatically and improved air quality inside the home – a crucial factor for anyone working long hours indoors.

The screens have proven their value not only in summer, but throughout the year – with seasonal leaf fall, pollen, and insects all controlled at the point of entry. Their understated appearance and smooth operation make them an elegant, user-friendly addition that the family now can’t imagine living without.
