Consultative Approach

Our association with this client began with consultation – a sharing of the architectural vision and discussions around the importance of the design.

Many of our large power screen customers come to us looking for a solar management solution to large glazed extensions, and our client for this project was in that group – the homeowner was also the architect.

Maximise Light

The design for the contemporary extension maximised all available light, so anything obstructing that light or interrupting the new clean architectural lines would have been unwelcome, which is why our client specified the screen.

Our screens are designed to work with the latest architectural trends. They perfectly complement contemporary glazed spaces and light-filled living – augmenting the interior environment.

From Inception

Our Projects Manager Mike Cernik worked closely with the architect all the way through the project. He says: “Being involved right at the start of this project paid dividends, as it does with all our architect/build projects.

“It means we get to the heart of the customer’s requirements, understand their objectives, and therefore advise on the best solution – not only for mesh performance, but on the best route for a recessed install that doesn’t impact the architect’s design.

“Screening is playing an increasingly central role in the management of light and the reduction of thermal gain in building design. The use of screens – whether recessed or retro-fitted – can vastly improve the interior climate and reduce environmental impact.”

Solar Control

Thermal comfort gains are made by retaining heat in the evenings while deflecting energy during the day – helping to improve SAP ratings. Sun and wind sensors can automatically adjust screen position – giving you even more control.

Our customer for this project could select from a range of technical performance fabrics for their screen, including solar shading, privacy screening, and fine meshes for insect-free ventilation.

They chose a 7510 10% privacy mesh in charcoal, providing 90% UV block (a reassuring ventilated barrier for interior summer dining) and 100% protection from insect ingress.

A Finger on the Pulse of Functionality

From solar management to insect control, Phantom’s power screens work hard to deliver on performance without blocking light in the way curtains and blinds can.

There are various ways to install our screens, but for clients seeking low-impact, the sleekest finish is a fully integrated and recessed installation – so the screen disappears from view when not in use.

Fitting the screen in the hidden recess

Constructed to Conceal

We worked closely with the architect on this project to plan a ‘hidden’ recessed install between the oversized sliding doors and the exposed steels, in order to achieve that fully recessed look.

The screen required a cavity space of 178mm width by 267mm depth. A recessed side track assembly sits to the side of the roller mounting bracket to guide the mesh neatly during operation.

Bespoke Production

The 4.8m wide power screen was hand-made to size in our workshops by our team of master screen makers.

We custom-painted the drop bar to RAL 9005 matt black to precisely match the colour of the sliding door framework and then handed it to our professional team for installation.

Installation Realisation

On all our power screens, the motor sits neatly inside the roller tube and is sited at the end containing the electrical junction box. An electrician may need to install an isolator switch although we can work to an existing socket in some situations.

Once the space has been created and set up, the installation can take place. For a screen of this size, the installation team will consist of two-three specialists.

Smart Home Integration

After we installed this screen (and after all power screen installs), our professionals will set the limits with the remote system to ensure the screen stops correctly on the floor. We then conduct a series of other quality and performance tests before signing the installation off as complete.

For customers with a home automation system, the screen connection is usually added as an accessory via the individual system app – we can often advise and assist if required, depending on the system.

Multi-Functional Automation

Any additional accessories – such as remote wall switches, weather sensors, or GPS daylight sensors – are also set up at the installation phase and tested accordingly.

And for properties with multiple screens, these can be linked and programmed to deploy in harmony exactly as you want them to.

Well Finished

Our customer can now make the most of their open oversize doors with relaxed summer dining – even in the evenings when moths and bugs like to make a night time appearance.

They told us: “Our power screen adds a great finishing touch to this part of the house. It gives us a level of reassurance that the light and heat are being controlled, so we can enjoy the interior space in comfort.

“We went to great lengths to create the perfect family home, it made sense to finish it off with a Phantom Screen to make sure we got the best from it. We will continue to endorse Phantom Screens and recommend them on other architectural projects where solar control is required.”
