Behind the Scenes: Phantom Screens Project Featured on George Clarke's Beautiful Builds

George Clarke’s Beautiful Builds returned to Channel 4 in June 2026, and one episode featured a Phantom Screens installation. A Windsor homeowner had specified our Distinction XL retractable screens for her kitchen extension long before the cameras arrived, and the results spoke for themselves.

For us at Phantom Screens, it was exciting to see a project we had been involved with featured on national television. But while viewers saw the finished result, our involvement had begun long before the cameras arrived.

Like many of the projects featured on George Clarke’s Beautiful Builds, this wasn’t simply about creating a home that looked impressive. It was about creating a space that worked beautifully for the people living in it every day.

Long before filming started

One of the things we enjoy most about working on projects like this is that homeowners often approach us during the design phase, not after the build is complete.

This homeowner, Michelle, had a clear vision for her kitchen extension. Large bifold doors and a bifold kitchen window would create a bright, open space with uninterrupted views of the garden and plenty of natural ventilation.

However, she also understood that opening up an entire elevation of a home could bring practical challenges. Fresh air was welcome, but insects, airborne debris and glare were often less desirable.

Rather than waiting until the project was finished, she began researching solutions early in the process.

A homeowner who knew exactly what she wanted

What stood out about this project was how much thought Michelle had already given to how she wanted to use the space.

Having previously lived near a river and experienced ongoing issues with insects, she was determined not to face the same problem in her new home.

She told us:

“When I lived in Europe, well-designed, sturdy screens were pretty common. After investing in large bifold doors and a bifold window, I wanted to be able to enjoy them fully without worrying about the kitchen-diner filling with bugs.”

Conversations like these are common for our team. Homeowners aren’t simply looking for a screen. They’re looking for a way to make the most of the spaces they’ve invested so much time and effort creating.

Supporting the design, not competing with it

One of the biggest considerations on contemporary projects is preserving the architectural vision.

When homeowners invest in large glazed openings, they want clean sightlines, uninterrupted views and a strong connection to the outdoors. Any solution added to the opening needs to support that objective rather than detract from it.

For this project, Distinction XL retractable screens were specified for both the bifold doors and bifold kitchen window.

When in use, they helped Michelle enjoy fresh air while keeping insects outside. When not required, they retracted completely from view, allowing the glazing to remain the focal point of the design.

As Michelle explained:

“I did look at some cheaper alternatives, but they either seemed flimsy or looked a bit gaudy. We’d invested so much in the bifolds that it didn’t make sense to compromise on the finishing detail. Phantom Screens felt like a more considered solution – discreet, well-engineered and designed to retract fully out of sight.”

Seeing the finished result

Projects like this often take months, sometimes years, to move from concept to completion.

As a supplier, we’re typically involved in just one part of a much larger story. Architects, designers, builders and homeowners all play a role in bringing the vision to life.

That’s why it was particularly rewarding to see the completed project showcased on a programme such as George Clarke’s Beautiful Builds.

Of course, seeing the project on television was exciting. But for us, the real success was knowing Michelle could use the space exactly as she had intended.

The bifold doors and windows could remain open during warmer weather, fresh air could move through the kitchen-diner, and the connection to the garden could be enjoyed more often.

As Michelle told us:

“The screens are really smooth, blend seamlessly with the windows and doors, and are exactly what I’d hoped for. They’re more transparent than I expected, which was a lovely surprise.”

More than a television appearance

While it was wonderful to see this project featured on Channel 4, what made it special for us was not the television exposure itself.

It was working with homeowners like Michelle – people who have a clear vision for how they want to live and who care enough to get every detail right.

Every project is different, but the goal remains the same: helping homeowners enjoy fresh air, natural light and a stronger connection to the outdoors without compromising the design of their home.
