The Lodge on Loch Lomond is a luxury hotel situated right on the water’s edge, with panoramic views across one of Scotland’s most iconic lochs. With 48 guest bedrooms and an award-winning restaurant, the hotel is a destination for international visitors seeking tranquillity, comfort, and world-class hospitality.
When hotel owner Niall Colquhoun began plans to refurbish the hotel’s Colquhoun’s Restaurant and Lounge, maintaining guest comfort while enhancing the aesthetic was a top priority. The east-facing façade featured expansive frameless glass doors – ideal for showcasing sunrise views, but tiringly problematic when it came to glare, heat build-up, and insect ingress.
Having seen Phantom Screens’ extensive experience of providing fly screens for waterside properties, Naill believed our screens would provide the perfect solution. Insect Screens for Commercial Properties
In commercial hospitality settings, many operators default to window tinting, integrated blinds, or low-E glass to manage solar gain. However, each of these solutions presents drawbacks: they limit airflow, obscure views, or struggle to address insect ingress.
In contrast, integrated fly screens from Phantom offered a discreet, elegant alternative. Designed to retract into the ceiling space, our automated screens allow the restaurant to remain bright, cool, and bug-free – without sacrificing its minimalist design.
Our standard mesh was selected, reducing glare during breakfast service while allowing full visibility of the loch beyond. The mesh provides up to 55% UV protection, reducing solar heat gain and the risk of textile fading without darkening the interior. Most importantly, it allows guests to keep the doors open to enjoy the breeze, all while keeping insects at bay. On project where heat takes priority over visibility, our solar mesh would be recommended.

Automated, Integrated, Sophisticated
Having contacted us early in the planning process, Niall and his architects gave our technical team the chance to design a fully recessed solution. A discreet and sophisticated installation where housing cartridges and side rails are concealed within the ceiling and wall finishes. The screens are virtually invisible when not in use, preserving the clean, open lines of the refurbished space.
The system comprises six power screens, split into two operational groups of three. Each group has its own dedicated remote control, plus a master controller offering complete flexibility. Whether staff want to deploy all screens during a busy lunch service or just one section at sunset, the system is simple, silent, and efficient.
This solution also reduces reliance on air conditioning during summer months – a meaningful benefit for commercial operators who are conscious of their energy bills and environmental impact.
